Iceland is as close as you can get to the perfect holiday destination: as exotic as it is familiar, with some of the most unique landscapes and jaw-dropping views in the world, full of geothermal energy and hot springs for that warm winter holiday feeling and not to mention a lively nightlife and delicious, fresh food that you can’t get anywhere else.

Not convinced? Here are 10 reasons why Iceland is absolutely worth a visit:

1. The Landscapes

With its unique landscape and stunning scenery, it’s no wonder that Iceland has become such a popular place for TV shows, music videos, and movies (Game of Thrones, Prometheus, Oblivion…)

2. The Beaches

Iceland might not come to mind as the first holiday destination for sun worshippers but if you’re up for an adventure you can find some incredible beaches where you can enjoy the geothermal water and soak up the view.

3. Glacier Hikes

Who doesn’t love a good glacier hike? Iceland’s glaciers are surprisingly accessible to tourists, with hiking trails up Sólheimajökull, Mýrdalsjökull and Eyjafjallajökull glaciers. For the more advanced ice climbers, there are also some impressive ice walls waiting to be conquered.

4. The Blue Lagoon

No list about Iceland would be complete without mentioning its most famous geothermal spa. Although the Blue Lagoon has become somewhat of a tourist trap, it’s still worth visiting to take a dip in this milky blue lagoon and marvel at the stunning view over Reykjavik from inside the lagoon.

5. The Nightlife

The best nightlife in the world is found in Iceland. You will be hard-pressed to find a city on Earth where you can enjoy the Northern Lights, hot springs, and go clubbing all within walking distance (or no distance at all if partying on a glacier).

6. Víkingur Ólafsson

While not Iceland’s most famous musician, Víkingur Ólafsson is certainly one of its greatest. His haunting melodies and enchanting lyrics will have you coming back for more over and over again.

7. The Food

Icelandic cuisine has been heavily influenced by its surrounding countries as well as the settlers who first arrived in the 9th century. Typical Icelandic dishes consist of fresh fish, lamb, and vegetables. Although many think that it’s difficult to find vegetarian food in Iceland, you would be surprised to find a variety of delicious veggie options at almost every restaurant.

8. The Northern Lights

Iceland is home to the world’s best opportunities for spotting Aurora Borealis. The Northern Lights are best visible between late August and April, but on the clearest nights, you can see them almost anywhere in Iceland.

9. The Volcanoes

The geology of Iceland is fascinating; it sits right on top of the world’s mid-oceanic ridge so it’s no wonder that there are so many volcanoes in Iceland. This doesn’t just make for breathtaking views, but also a unique opportunity to witness the creation of new land and lava flows first-hand.

10. The People

Icelanders are said to be some of the friendliest people in the world; they like nothing more than having a good time with visitors and will always help if they can.

Iceland is a country that offers an incredible diversity of landscapes, cultures, and experiences. If you’re looking for somewhere to enjoy the Northern Lights or go clubbing with friends while also taking in some gorgeous views and enjoying delicious food, Iceland should be at the top of your list!
